Art, culture and history are key components of public space and socio-spatial, urban development. The remit of the Urban Culture Unit within the Art, Culture and History Department of Berlin’s Mitte District Office encompasses art in architecture, art in urban spaces, and cultural urban and local development in the Mitte district.
The department initiates, implements, advises on and supports projects in these areas and contributes to the maintenance and preservation of existing cultural assets in the district’s public spaces. The department aims to make public space tangible as a shared resource and the foundation of urban coexistence, and to make this space accessible to diverse uses and interest groups in line with the district’s diverse population, using aesthetic and discursive means.
