Icons imply a collective understanding. They only work because it is assumed that ‘everyone’ knows what they mean. But who is this ‘average person’ to whom an icon refers? And who decides which knowledge is considered universally valid?
Icons suggest a collective understanding. They function only because it is assumed that “everyone” knows what they mean. But who is this average to which an icon refers? And who defines which knowledge counts as generally valid?
As the s9 collective, we do not only want to analyse these mechanisms but also respond to them artistically. Drawing on our different generational, individual, and cultural perspectives, we question and reinterpret selected icons of our time (such as emojis, generational symbols, or everyday icons). Our work aims to make visible that icons do not necessarily carry fixed meanings, but are instead mutable surfaces of projection.
About the Artists
The s9 collective is a multidisciplinary artist collective based in Berlin-Moabit, bringing together multiple generations as well as diverse individual and cultural backgrounds.
