The Location
AktionsRaum is an open-access centre for school-based youth work and youth social work in Berlin-Mitte (Wedding), run by the Fortbildungsinstitut für die pädagogische Praxis (FiPP) e.V. Participation, gender equality, a focus on the living environment and social space, as well as diversity and inclusion, form the basis for our socio-educational work.
The AktionsRaum sees itself as an open, inclusive meeting place for children, young people and local residents, and acts as an interface between family, school and leisure. In addition to open children’s and youth work, the building provides space for counselling, creative and cultural activities, music and sport, as well as neighbourhood and community initiatives.
Workshops and Educational Programmes
Workshops and educational programmes centred on art are held (ir)regularly in connection with the new replacement building for the AktionsRaum. You can find an overview of current events here:
Led by the artist Bernd Trasberger, a series of workshops on art in architecture is being held to accompany the construction project:
During the Berlin Easter holidays, a group of around ten children went on a discovery tour featuring a treasure hunt to explore art in architecture in the immediate vicinity, and later visited the building site together with the architects. The architects explained the construction process – how the old building was being demolished, how the various materials had to be recycled or sorted, and what sort of new building was being created here. On the final day of the workshop series, the children discussed their experiences once more and what art can represent or be. Finally, the workshop participants were involved in selecting the artists for the competition. From 15 artists recommened by the Commission for Art in Architecture and Art in Urban Space at Berlin’s Mitte District Office, they selected three following a presentation of the artists’ concepts.
Art-in-Architecture Competition
In accordance with the Building Directive (ABau), funding for art has also been allocated for this replacement development. On this basis, the State of Berlin, represented by the Mitte District Office, is organising a single-phase, restricted and anonymous competition in accordance with the State of Berlin’s Guidelines for Art in Construction and Art in Urban Spaces (as at 2019) and the Guidelines for Planning Competitions (RPW 2013), insofar as they apply to art in construction.
The aim is to create a work of art that has been developed specifically for this location and is characterised by its artistic originality.
Completion and inauguration of the replacement building and the art in architecture are currently planned for the fourth quarter of 2027.
