FINAL: KISR Leipziger Straße

Spittelkolonnaden
Leipziger Str. 49
10117 Berlin

The FINALE of KISR – Art in Urban Space on Leipziger Straße offers yet another opportunity to come together and look back on the two years of KISR along this street.

The three completed art projects – Gertraudenhain by Christof Zwiener, diadéo trésor by Kandis Friesen and rübermachen by msk7 – serve as focal points, as does the event series Zu Gast bei…: here, local figures opened their doors and spoke in living rooms, exhibition spaces, workshops or on the pavement about their work and their lives in this place.

At the FINALE, these experiences coalesce into a shared space of resonance: two moderated discussion panels will explore areas of tension and possibilities for art in public spaces – from questions of transience and sustainability to lines of conflict between design, city marketing and everyday use. Two guided tours led by Poligonal will take participants back to the three art projects and to the venues and hosts of Zu Gast bei… . At twilight, the Spittelkolonnaden will finally open their doors for a live musical cabaret with The Dames. With piano and vocals, Nancy Nutter and Madame Eve invite the audience on a fabulous rollercoaster ride and to sing along – with pop covers and plenty of glitter – right in the middle of Leipziger Straße. The circle closes at WAMIKI, where all the competition entries can be viewed once more and the evening can be danced away.

DISCUSSION #1: Where city and art get in each other’s way – yet still dance together
This discussion highlights the areas of tension that art in public spaces encounters: caught between creative ambitions, city marketing, political and economic interests, and the increasingly conflict-ridden brutalisation of urban space, the question arises as to how art emerges in this context and how urban spaces can be conceived as venues for artistic engagement.

TALK #2: Temporary on Site – Art at the Intersection of Impact and Context
This second round of talks examines artistic strategies in urban space and explores how temporary art projects position themselves between transience and lasting impact. The focus is on forms of artistic intervention that respond to their respective contexts in a reflexive or conflictual manner – ranging from making things visible, causing irritation, beautification or functional enhancement. What traces does art leave behind – and how does it change us and our view of urban space?
