Art in Architecture in the Mitte District

To mark Architecture Day on the last weekend in June, art-in-architecture projects completed in the Mitte district over the past twelve years will be on display for a month from 4 June at the Kunstpavillon on Mathilde-Jacob-Platz.

Art in Architecture has been created since 1979 in accordance with the Building Regulations (ABau) in connection with public construction projects (building and civil engineering). In the Mitte district, Art in Architecture has been realised since 2012 at the Zille-Haus and Haus am Nauener Platz youth leisure centres, as well as at the Schiller Library and the Fanny-Hensel Music School. Art in Architecture has also been realised at schools built or currently under construction as part of the school building initiative, such as the primary school at Nordhafen or the new school sites on Adalbertstraße and Reinickendorfer Straße. Art in Architecture is also created in public spaces, such as on the forecourt of Wedding Town Hall on Müllerstraße.

Through competitive selection processes, the artists Susanne Bosch, Mariana Castillo Deball, Jorn Ebner, Esther Ernst, Jelena Fuzinato, Stef Heidhues, Stephanie Imbeau, Angela Mewes and msk7 were chosen, having impressed the respective judging panels with their artistic approaches. These panels comprise the building’s users, politicians and artists.

Art in Architecture engages directly with the architecture and use of the respective building, as well as the surrounding urban space. Far removed from museums, Art in Architecture touches our everyday lives and offers alternative perspectives on the function of architecture and public space. It is an element of building culture that helps shape the concept of a building.
