Percent-for-Art is a measure-related artistic work that is created in connection with public construction projects (building construction and civil engineering). It can be temporary or permanent in nature. Since 1979, there has been an administrative regulation for the realization of art in construction within the framework of public construction projects. The state of Berlin is committed to this tradition and wants to further strengthen the importance of art in construction and art in urban spaces, including its communication, maintenance, and documentation.

Art in urban spaces engages with the historical, social, and/or architectural complexity of urban spaces and creates forums through which socially relevant topics are brought to public attention, discussed, and reflected upon.

Guided tours, discussion series, workshops, and other educational and discourse formats are offered on an irregular basis as part of the mowe Festival for Art and Urban Culture, Month of Art in Architecture (MKB), or KISR – Art in Urban Space. At ever-changing locations and in different urban spaces, they offer concrete opportunities to engage intensively with art, architecture, urban history, and urban development and to enter into conversation.

Art, culture, and history are important components of public space and socio-spatial, urban development. The areas of activity of the Urban Culture Department in the Art, Culture, and History Division of the Berlin Mitte District Office include art in construction, art in urban spaces, and cultural urban and location development in the Mitte district.
